nice thing #4: LOVE-FILLED HIPPES AT WOODSTOCK
two nice things in one day can’t hurt, right?
today marks the 40th anniversary of the start of woodstock. from august 15th to the 17th in a field in bethel, new york, people of all ages and all kinds enjoyed the kind of music that we don’t see anymore (as well as some peace/lovin’ and a few trips). nothing like woodstock has ever really happened successfully, although plenty of people have tried to recreate it’s movement (or, as it was described by one of the original producers, it’s moment).
the couple in the picture became the cover of the original woodstock album. they are nick and bobbie ercoline, and 40 years after that picture was taken, they’re still married.
groovy = nice.

nice thing #3: FEEL GOOD MOVIES

i just finished reading the graphic novel ‘persepolis’ by marjane satrapi this morning. it’s an autobiographical work about a girl living during the iranian revolution in the 70’s. it’s a beautiful telling that’s both funny and moving, and i won’t lie, it’s the first summer reading book that made me want to read the sequel. the video above is the trailer for the movie, relased in 2007. it’s dubbed in english (it’s the UK trailer) but is originally in french. it was nominated for an oscar in the foreign film category.

(there are PLENTY of other feel-good movies, but this one is especially moving to me right now. know any other movies that make your heart happy? TELL ME (REBLOG) ABOUT THEM!)

cela est agréable.

nice thing #2: PUTTING UP YOUR FEET
after a long day of…anything, it’s really nice to sit down and elevate your feet. not only does it alleviate the pressure gravity and the rest of your body put on your feet, but scientifically it lets your blood flow a little better from your heart to the rest of your body. not scientifically, it just feels really nice to put up your feet and relax.
ain’t that nice?

nice thing #1: ROOFING.
it rained today in georgia, where i live when i’m not at school. i went outside and stood in it for a few minutes while my dog did his business. it was cool compared to the usual humid, blistering-heat sunny days. i went inside my house, damp, and was happy that - beacause of my roof - i could stay dry.
that’s nice.

niceties.

there are five definitions listed by merriam-webster’s online dictionary for the word ‘nicety’. they are:
1
. the quality or state of being nice
2. an elegant, delicate, or civilized feature <enjoy the niceties of life>
3. a fine point or distinction <the niceties of table manners>
4. careful attention to details, delicate exactness
5. delicacy of taste or feeling

the classification of “nice” is subjective. you might think a heaping pile of compost is nice because it’s recyclable material while another person may think it’s useless garbage. i happen to think that grafitti is an amazing, complicated, and incredibly brave means of expression, no matter how it may “deface” and “ruin” property all over the world. to each his own (opinion, that is).

i created this page to encourage niceties. i like the idea that somebody - maybe only one and maybe ten million - might agree that nice things still exist. i’ll be posting some well-known, profound, silly, weird, gross…but mostly simple things that people often pass by. i’m hoping to post one nice thing every day, but some days could require more, some none. i make no promises for consistency, i only promise to make nice.

katie

(ps: i should probably go ahead and put it out in to the internets that i don’t own anything i post unless i say so, and i’ll source anything i do post that doesn’t belong to little old me. thanks!)
